Emily St. John Mandel–the bestselling author behind the critically acclaimed novels Station Eleven and The Glass Hotel–joins Kelsey and Jenn on this episode of The First Fifty Pages.  Emily talks about her love of Science Fiction, the un-romantic process of revision, and about how her latest novel, Sea of Tranquility, moves through time and space.  (!) Spoiler — the future is not a catastrophe…

“There was a period of time when I was a teenager when {Science Fiction} was the only genre I read, so it was something I was just naturally drawn to at a really early age. When I was a kid, my family had no money, but we did have library cards, so I got to read a ton of books and I just remember spending a ton of time going over the shelves in the library, just collecting all the sci-fi books I could find….It’s just a genre I’ve always loved. I guess maybe there’s something in that genre about going to the very furthest bounds of imagination that I think really appeals to me.” – excerpt from the interview with Emily St. John Mandel on the First Fifty Pages podcast.

The First Fifty Pages is a collaboration between the Sioux City Public Library and Sioux City’s local NPR station, KWIT-KOJI. Hosts Kelsey Patterson and Jenn Delperdang interview authors, discuss what they’re reading, what’s popular in our community, and what’s happening at the Library.
